The Problem

The leash you have is probably hurting your dog.

We did not believe it either, until we measured. Most leashes on the market in 2026 do one of three things wrong — and your dog feels every one of them, every walk, for years.

Chain weight on the neck

Even a "small" metal chain leash weighs 14 ounces — about 1.3% of a 70-pound dog's body weight, hanging off their neck for 45 minutes a walk. Imagine a heavy backpack you cannot take off.

Nylon webbing chafing

Cheap nylon leashes look soft until they get wet. Then the abrasive coating wakes up and starts wearing the fur off the back of your dog's neck. We have seen six-month-old labs with raw rings.

Hardware that corrodes and snaps

The "metal" snap on a $14 leash is zinc alloy with chrome plating. It corrodes from the inside in about 18 months. When it lets go, it lets go at the worst possible moment — usually on a busy street.

Why Bramble & Bow

Four things we refuse to compromise on.

Every piece we make has to clear these four bars. If a supplier cannot meet them, we change suppliers. We have changed suppliers three times.

01

Vegetable-tanned leather

Bark-tanned in Tuscany using oak and chestnut, the same way it has been done for 600 years. No chrome, no heavy metals. Compostable at end of life.

02

Solid brass hardware

Sand-cast solid brass, not plated. Rated to 600+ pounds of pull. Will outlast the leather, your dog, and probably you. Patinas beautifully.

03

Six-foot length, hand-cut

The trainer-recommended length. Long enough for sniffing, short enough for traffic. Every piece is measured and cut by hand — there is some variance, on purpose.

04

Lifetime hardware warranty

If a snap, ring, or rivet ever fails, we replace the piece. No receipt needed, no questions, on our dime. We average 8 warranty claims a year on 14,000 leashes sold.

Product Detail

The boring stuff that actually matters.

Spec sheet for the Heritage Walking Set. Read it, do not read it — it is here either way.

01 · Material

9oz Tuscan full-grain

Bark-tanned hides from Conceria Walpier, the tannery our grandfather bought from in 1972. Single piece, no laminations. Develops the patina you see on a good baseball glove after a season.

02 · Hardware

Solid cast brass, USA

Trigger snap, D-ring, and rivets are sand-cast by a foundry in Pennsylvania that has been making brass for the Navy since 1944. 600 lb test rating, no plating to flake.

03 · Stitching

9-stitch saddle, by hand

Two needles, waxed linen thread, locked at every endpoint. If one stitch fails, the next holds. Saddle-stitched leather will outlast machine-sewn nylon by twenty years.

04 · Sizing

Three collar sizes

Small (10–14″), Medium (14–18″), Large (18–24″). Sized at the third hole — five holes total, so you have two up and two down for puppy growth and winter coats.

05 · Care

Wipe, condition, repeat

Damp cloth weekly. Smith's or Saphir leather balm every three to six months. Skip the soaking. The leather will tell you when it is thirsty — it goes from supple to slightly stiff. That is the signal.

06 · Sustainability

Compostable, repairable

The leather is biodegradable. The brass is endlessly recyclable. The thread is linen. When this leash finally retires after a couple of decades, every part of it has somewhere to go that is not a landfill.

The Three-Year Test

How a $14 leash ages vs. a Bramble & Bow.

We bought eight popular budget leashes off Amazon and Petco and tracked them for three years against our own. Here is what we saw, condensed.

Standard nylon leash

Three years of slow decay.

YEAR 1
Hardware tarnishes, edge frayingChrome plating on the snap starts pitting around month 9. Edges of the nylon webbing begin to fuzz.
YEAR 2
Spring weakens, smell sets inThe trigger snap requires a real squeeze to open. Nylon has absorbed enough sweat and rain to never smell clean again.
YEAR 3
Failure event, replacementThe snap fails or the stitching pulls through at the loop. Average lifespan in our test: 2.6 years. Cost-per-year: $5.40.
Bramble & Bow

Three years of getting better.

YEAR 1
Patina starts, hand-feel softensThe leather darkens from tan to honey where you grip. The stiffness from week one disappears entirely.
YEAR 2
Color deepens, brass warmsThe leather is now the color of dark whiskey. The brass has a hand-rubbed glow from being touched a thousand times.
YEAR 3
Better than the day you got itThis is the leash you reach for. Hardware unchanged. Leather perfected. Average lifespan in our test: still running. Cost-per-year so far: $29.

"Eight months in and the patina is unreal. My GSD pulls hard, the hardware has not budged once. I keep buying her new toys; this is the only thing I have ever bought for her that I would buy again."

"Switched from a heavy chain leash and Cooper actually walks calmer. I think the weight on his neck was bothering him the entire time. The leather is gorgeous. The price stopped feeling expensive on day three."

"I was skeptical of paying $89 for a leash. Then I added up what I had spent on cheap replacements in the last four years. It was $147. I felt like a fool. Buy the Bramble. It's the last one you'll need."

"Got the Olive for my pittie Daisy and the matching collar. Genuinely the nicest thing she owns. The brass is heavy in your hand in a way that makes a $14 leash feel like a child's toy."

Sarah Vega, founder of Bramble and Bow, holding a brass-buckled leather leash in her workshop
Founder Story

Started by Sarah Vega after her rescue Otis snapped three leashes in his first year.

The third one was a $40 "premium" nylon from a brand I had trusted. Otis was 14 months old, 80 pounds, and we were crossing Route 1 when the snap let go. He chased a squirrel into traffic. He came back. Not every dog does.

I am a leather worker by training — I made saddles for ten years before I made anything for dogs. I went home that night, pulled a strap of vegetable-tanned hide off the rack, ordered a solid brass trigger snap from a marine-hardware supplier, and saddle-stitched the first Bramble & Bow in my kitchen. That was 2019. Otis used it until he passed in 2024.

We make leashes the slow way because the fast way killed too many dogs.

Common Questions

Eight things every new customer asks.

If your question is not here, email us at hello@brambleandbow.co — a human, usually Maddie or Sarah, replies inside 4 hours during business days.

How do I pick the right collar size for my dog?
Measure your dog's neck with a soft tape, snug but with two fingers underneath. Small fits 10–14 inches, Medium 14–18, Large 18–24. If you are between sizes, go up — the leather softens and shapes to your dog over the first month. Every collar has five holes (two up, two down from the sized hole), so you have room for a puppy growing or a winter coat.
Will this work for a strong puller or a large breed?
Yes. The leash uses 9oz vegetable-tanned full-grain leather and a solid brass trigger snap rated to 600+ pounds of pull. We have customers using it on Cane Corsos, Rottweilers, Pyrenees, and shelter pulls — daily — without issue. If you have a known severe puller, we recommend pairing with a properly-fitted harness so the load is on the chest, not the neck. Better for the dog, easier on the leash.
Can I walk two dogs on one leash?
We make a dedicated brass-coupler attachment ($24) that clips into the trigger snap and gives you two leads from one main leash. It is rated for two dogs up to 60 pounds each. For larger pairs, or for any combo over 120 pounds total, we recommend a leash per dog — the leverage gets unwieldy fast otherwise.
How long is the leash and why six feet?
Six feet, hand-cut to the inch. Six feet is the trainer-recommended length for loose-leash walking — long enough for sniffing detours, short enough to keep your dog close in traffic. We also offer a 4-foot Traffic leash (city dogs) and an 8-foot Long-line (training, beaches, hikes) — both made the same way, both available on request via email.
Is the hardware really solid brass? How will it age?
Yes — solid cast brass, not brass-plated. It is meaningfully heavier than the zinc-alloy hardware on big-box leashes and it will not rust, ever, in any climate. It develops a warm hand-rubbed patina with use — most of our customers prefer it that way. If you want it shiny again, a polish cloth and 30 seconds of rubbing brings it back. We do not recommend chemical polishes; they strip the patina and the brass loses character.
How do I care for the leather over the years?
For the first month, just use it. The natural oils from your hand and your dog's coat do most of the work. After that, a wipe with a damp cloth weekly and a coat of neutral leather conditioner (we recommend Smith's Leather Balm or Saphir Renovateur) every three to six months. Avoid soaking — if it gets wet, air-dry away from heat. Never put it in a dryer or near a radiator; heat is the one thing that really damages vegetable-tanned leather.
What is the return process?
Thirty days, no questions asked, no restocking fees. Return shipping is on us — we email you a prepaid label. The leash gets used on real walks during those 30 days; that is the point. If it is not right for any reason, send it back and we refund within two business days of receipt. We have a 4% return rate; about half of those returns are people who ordered the wrong size and end up keeping the replacement.
Is there a restocking fee or a catch on the lifetime warranty?
No restocking fees, no catch. The lifetime warranty covers all hardware — snaps, rings, rivets — for as long as you own the leash. The leather is consumable: it will scratch, soften, and develop character. That is leather doing its job. If hardware ever fails on a Bramble & Bow piece, we repair or replace it at our cost, no receipt needed. We have honored four warranty claims this year. Two of them were from second owners; the leash had been gifted.
